JAR Professional Pilot Studies

Ground study material for the JAA ATPL for aeroplanes! Just as important as the exams is the interview panel (BA expect over 85% overall passing grade), and this is the book for those who want to deal with both - its purpose is to help you become a professional, for which the exams are but a step on the way - doing the bare minimum to pass them makes you ill-prepared to be a pilot, which is not fair to future passengers and painfully obvious to employers (and interviewers) who certainly expect you to have more than a basic knowledge. The whole syllabus is covered - and more - in as much Plain English as possible!

Pre-Flight Briefing Manual, Basic PPL Course - Woodgate

A comprehensive Flight Briefing Manual for Flying Instructors covering each exercise in the JAR Syllabus the AIM, points on Airmanship and Air Exercises within each component of the exercise is set out in the sequence in which it will normally be covered in flight. Similarly the Instructors Notes for each exercise should not be seen as covering every point one might wish to impart to every student, but rather they identify what have been found as the most salient points to stress. In order to ensure that these briefings are suitable for most single-engined light aircraft, where appropriate, boxes have been left for you to enter the correct airspeed and r.p.m. figures for the aircraft type(s) you use for training.

Pre-Flight Briefing Manual, Instructors Multi-Engine Course - Woodgate

The multi-engine course manual is divided into five sections. Section 1 to 5 comprise the full and detailed pre-flight briefings covering the syllabi of both the PPL, B Rating and Mandatory Multi-Engine Conversion Training required for the inclusion of the first multi-engine type rating in a Professional Pilots' Licence. Section 1 is concerned solely with normal two engine operation, and covers in detail the general handling exercise that are required prior to the commencement of asymmetric flight training. Section 5 covers all aspects of the asymmetric flying syllabus using the same format as Section 1 - namely each flight exercise commences with a statement of the aim of that exercise, followed by 'Instructor Notes'. The relevant briefing points including all the elements which should be included in the air exercise are then specified sequentially and in full.

Teaching & Learning

For many years there has been a strong dividing line between those who teach and those who instruct. Teaching is concerned with the development of intelligence and the acquisition of knowledge, processes confined mostly to the mind, whilst instructing has been confined to showing people how to do things, and so this has been mostly concerned with the use of the body.
In many areas this division still exists but in some flight instruction for instance, the two are inseparable. Without an intelligent appreciation of what he is doing with the skills of his eyes, ears, hands and feet, a modern pilot will be unable to reach an adequate level of aviation safety.
Due to the sophistication reached in aviation and its complex equipment and regulations, the need for teaching has never been greater. Therefore the value and presitge of a Flight Instructor will not only depend upon his flying skill, personality and standard of technical knowledge, but also upon his teaching ability.

These notes do not purport to cover all aspects of teaching and learning. They are intended as thinking guide to the new instructor, and cover many of the aspects involved in the process of teaching and learning in relation to flight training. They will help the flying instructor to understand this need and intelligently used, will reflect upon the standard of the pilots he helps to train.

You Have Control! Being a Better Flying Instructor - Hatton

The purpose of this book is to provide information, help, and guidance to anyone starting work as a flying instructor, or working towards this qualification. It is intended to complement the Flight Instructor Course by focusing on the practicalities of actually doing the job, rather than on the content of each individual flying lesson. Subjects including organisation and planning, professionalism, and interaction with students are covered, with the use of examples from real-life situations to offer sound, practical advice. General information on how to use time effectively and how to ensure that students get the most from their lessons is offered, as well as specific details such as suggestions for topics of conversation to hold during a particularly quiet trial lesson!

This book will equip new instructors with the knowledge gained from the experience of doing the job, before they have had the opportunity to gain this experience for themselves. Clearly and entertainingly written by an experienced instructor, this book should have a place in the flight bag of every new or would-be instructor.

Savvy flight Instructor - ASA Gregory brown

As a newly certified Flight Instructor, a pilot can be faced with a difficult prospect — how to make a living, build piloting hours, find the best place to instruct, find flight students in the first place… and keep the fun in flying at the same time. Author and Flight Instructor Greg Brown offers enthusiastic (as well as humorous) help for flight instructors to do just these things. This book promotes professionalism in flight instructing, gives marketing suggestions to both individual instructors and flight schools, and provides insight into the successful tricks of the trade. Flight school managers will benefit from a special chapter dedicated to the unique dynamics of a flight school, “The Flight School: Framework for Success.” Through innovative techniques, this section shows how flight schools can revamp marketing and student-recruiting strategies, and explains where today’s opportunities are. Greg Brown’s love for flying is obvious in every chapter, as is his concern for the image of the flight instructor and school, that they perform the best they can to seek out, promote, and sustain the joy of flight for the good of the entire industry.

Testimonial:

As a manager and chief instructor of a flight school, I found The Savvy Flight Instructor to be one of the best tools around to help instructors understand the real world of flight instruction — in particular handling customer relationships and creating a professional demeanor. I now ask each instructor applicant at our school for a "book report" on this book as a part of their employment interview, and we've made it required reading for our customer service people as well. This book is an absolute gem. I wish I'd read it when I became an instructor 22 years ago.
